Building a Sensory Plan

Creating a supportive sensory environment is the first step —

understanding what works over time is what drives real progress.

This module provides a simple system to help you track patterns, identify what supports regulation, and make small, effective adjustments.

The goal is not to track everything, but to notice what truly makes a difference.

Personal Goals

A sensory plan should be simple, flexible, and easy to follow. Rather than trying to plan every moment, focus on key parts of the day where support is most needed. Focus on moments that tend to be challenging like morning routines, transitions, and evening wind-downs.

Regulation Goal
  • Identify calming routines for transitions
  • Establish a consistent morning reset
  • Increase self-advocacy for breaks
Movement Goal
  • Engage in 10-minute movement breaks
  • Use heavy work during after-school decompression
  • Incorporate stretching before bed
Environment Goal
  • Optimize lighting in study areas
  • Create a dedicated quiet zone
  • Reduce auditory clutter during focus

Assessment Phase

Understanding individual sensory needs is the foundation of any effective system. Before building your plan, start by observing patterns throughout the day to see how the individual responds to different types of sensory input.

Key Observation Prompts:
  • When does dysregulation happen most often?
  • What environments feel overwhelming?
  • When is movement or stimulation sought out?
  • What activities seem to bring the most calm?

A simple tracking system helps turn observations into actionable insight. Over time, patterns will begin to appear.

Quick Tracking Scale

The Sensory Daily Rating System helps you notice progress at a glance without overcomplicating the day. Use this simple 1–5 scale to track overall regulation and identify long-term patterns.

1

Highly dysregulated; frequent overwhelm throughout the day.

2

Occasional dysregulation; several challenging moments.

3

Mostly regulated; manageable challenges occur.

4

Well-regulated throughout the majority of the day.

5

Exceptional regulation; feeling centered and balanced.
